Pleasant Rowland (now Pleasant Rowland Frautschi) is best known in the doll world for starting Pleasant Company, the makers of American Girl dolls. Mrs. Rowland's background as an educator provided her with the idea of combining dolls and historical fiction in order to encourage girls' love of reading and of American history.

Mrs. Rowland sold her company to Mattel in 1998 and left the company in 2000. Since then, she and her husband have focused their efforts on philanthropy.
