Betsy McCall was introduced as a paper doll in McCall's Magazine in 1951, by artist Kay Morrissey. Ideal produced the first, 14", Betsy McCall doll in 1952. In 1957, American Character created their 8" hard plastic Betsy McCall. Betsy and other characters from her paper dolls were made in other sizes, up to Play-Pal size (36"), and by many companies right through the 1980s. In 1997, Robert Tonner produced his own version of 14" Betsy and friends, and in 2000, he introduced his 8" Tiny Betsy, based on the original doll. Since then, Tonner has produced Betsy in up to 29" size, and even as an 8" resin BJD.
